Table 7-3 lists the tests in the RAM Test Group. If the computer has any of the follow-
ing symptoms, run the RAM Test Group:

A program is not running as usual, or a proven piece of software appears to mal-
function and you confirm that the software itself is not at fault by running it on
another computer.
‡
The computer periodically locks up (becomes unusable and must be rebooted),
especially at different times in various programs.
‡
Parity errors occur during operation. Record the referenced address on a copy of
the Diagnostics Checklist (provided in Chapter 8, "Getting Help").

The System Set Test Group double-checks many system board components, some of
which are tested by other test groups and others which are not. Table 7-4 lists the
tests in the System Set Test Group.
The following symptoms usually warrant running a System Set test:

function and you confirm that the software itself is not at fault by running it on
another computer without problems.

Performs an address check on all available RAM to
make sure that the system properly sets and clears
individual bits in RAM. Also determines if RAM read
and write operations affect more than one memory
address location at a time.
Does the following:

Address check.
‡
Data pattern checks that look for RAM bits that
are stuck high or low, short-circuited data lines,
and some data pattern problems that are inter-
nal to the memory chips.
‡
Parity check to verify the ability of the memory
subsystem to detect errors.
‡
Refresh check to verify that the DRAM is being
recharged properly.
Confirms the functionality of the computer's cache
memory.
