The bus-mastering enhanced integrated device electronics (EIDE) drivers provide a
performance improvement by off-loading certain functions from the microprocessor
during multithreaded operations (when several applications are running
simultaneously). The bus-mastering driver for your operating system has been
installed by Dell and is operative when you receive your computer. No further installa-
tion or configuration is needed.
NOTE: For additional information, refer to the readme.txt file that came with the bus-
mastering driver you received from Dell.

A backup copy of the bus-mastering driver is provided with the Microsoft Windows 95
CD. This driver is reinstalled automatically if you reinstall Windows 95. However, the
driver is disabled until you complete the following steps.
NOTES: If there is more than one hard-disk drive installed in your system, you must
enable direct memory access (DMA) for each hard-disk drive.
Only Dell-installed hard-disk drives support bus-mastering. Enabling bus-mastering on
a system with a hard-disk drive not supplied by Dell may result in a loss of data.

NOTES: To install the bus-mastering EIDE driver for Windows NT 4.0, you must have
a mouse connected to the system and Windows NT 4.0 must already be installed on
the hard-disk drive connected to the primary EIDE channel.
The following procedure assumes that the driver ( piixide.sys ), installation file
( piixide.inf ), and tag file ( disk1.nt ) are located in the same directory on the bus-
mastering EIDE driver diskette. Before starting this procedure, record the directory
where these files are located and the name of the Windows NT directory.
To reinstall the bus-mastering EIDE driver for Windows NT 4.0, follow these steps:
